The goal is to develop bilingual, biliterate, and bicultural students, with instruction split approximately 50% in English and 50% in the other language. These five schools make up the Renaissance Collective. PS 185 and PS 180 are developing strong International Baccalaureate programs. Three other Harlem schools are adding unique, specialized K programs in the fall of 2026. PS 149: The Sojourner Truth School - Instrumental Music PS 149 is launching a unique program for incoming kindergartners: the Renaissance Collective: Instrumental Music, an immersive curriculum in partnership with the nationally recognized Kaufman Music Center / Special Music School (M.859). In this program, music is treated as a core subject, equal to all of the other academic subjects. Music is treated as a powerful catalyst for creativity, focus, problem-solving, and personal growth. Students who enroll in this special program will receive two private lessons per week on the piano, violin, or flute. In addition, students will study music theory and chorus. This intensive music education has been proven to foster discipline, time management, delayed gratification and the development of a personal voice. District leadership held Harlem Working Group meetings to engage the community and collect feedback on the proposed plan. The Panel for Education Policy ultimately voted to accept the proposed plan and it was implemented starting in the 2025-2026 school year. The shared zone provides Harlem families with equal access to all schools in this area and aligns with current and historical enrollment choices.
